Pro-Equity Anti-Racism (PEAR) Initiative WADOC

Since Secretary Cheryl Strange joined in 2021, one of the top priorities of hers has been to create a human-centered organisation that is just, fair, equitable, inclusive, and welcomes diversity. The Department of Corrections (DOC), is making great strides in promoting a diverse and inclusive environment for staff and those in custody and care. This includes programs such as Amend, the hiring of an Equity Diversity Inclusion & Respect director, implementing a Safety Culture initiative, and partnering up with Tulalip Tribes for Indigenous people. Executive Order 22-04 by Inslee (pdf). Secretary Cheryl Strange says that DOC is committed to creating a Washington PEAR ecosystem. We are committed in operating a safe, humane corrections system. DOC has created a PEAR team, which includes staff from all levels as well as customers and partners. Our PEAR plan invests significant resources in three areas: Evaluating equity in the administration and sanctions of incarcerated persons Evaluating fairness and equity in the classification of those incarcerated people Evaluating equity in staff representation. We will be closer to our Strategic Anchors if we achieve our PEAR goals. We are excited for what lies ahead over the next few decades and look forward to working with our PEAR team and state government partners as we create a PEAR culture here in Washington.
