US abortions reach highest level in over a decade, sparked by surge in medication abortion
Abortions on the Rise in US Despite Bans #
Abortion rates in the United States have increased, even with the implementation of bans in several states since the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision in June 2022. A recent report from the Guttmacher Institute revealed that there were over 1 million abortions in 2023, a 10% increase from 2020. The rise in abortions occurred in states where bans were not implemented. The report also highlighted the growing popularity of medication abortion, which accounted for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in 2023. The use of telehealth services has contributed to the increased accessibility of medication abortion. However, the legal status of mifepristone, a drug used in medication abortion, is being challenged and could affect access to the medication across the country.
