Community events slated for Transit Equity Week
Local nonprofit Equity Transit will hold several community events next week in honor of Rosa Parks and Transit Equity Day.

According to Lani Faulkner (Director of Equity Transit), it can be hard for people living in Santa Cruz County to get around without a car. This can have a ripple effect on the lives of others who depend on public transport. Faulkner stated that 'the lack of reliable and robust public transit negatively impacts Hispanic, Black and student community members. This can limit and deny access to jobs, education, and opportunities throughout the county. Faina Segal, Friends of the Rail and Trail, stated that transit equity means acknowledging the need for affordable, reliable and safe transportation options. Everyone deserves to be able move around the county, whether they are going to school, work, or the beach. Faulkner stated that traffic violence has increased by more than 51% in a matter of years. Access to public transit is only possible if safe walking communities are available. The number of bicycle and pedestrian deaths in car crashes has increased by more than 30% both nationally and locally during the pandemic. Cost: No Charge
